Why Sarkodie’s Mary Album flopped in Tamale

Sarkodie and Akwaboah at Mary album launchMichael Owusu Addo, known by his stage name Sarkodie, is a Ghanaian hip hop and hiplife recording artist who recently launched his fourth studio album “Mary” at West Hills Mall. The event saw the expect crowd which turn out with a double rise in sales and as promised, Sarkodie shared pictures with the fans at his autograph signing.

Sarkodie’s Mary Album is his first live album. It is the fourth overall album, and the follow-up to his third studio album Sarkology. The album was released through his imprint Sarkcess Music.

Team Sarkcess’ next stop for the album launch was in Tamale on the 19th of September at the Discovery Hotel.
Whilst many were anticipating the album here in Accra, it turned out a lot of people outside the capital were not aware the rapper had something going on.

The unfortunate incident happened and the much-anticipated album autograph signing recorded a low turnout with fans at Tamale.
Organizers of the album launch asked everyone to pay GHc20 which includes a free copy of the Mary album before entering the venue but it seems the message wasn’t communicated well enough for the confused fans who are used to attending popular event at a low rate between Ghc10 and Ghc15. Although Sarkodie’s rate raised the standard, it also led to the low turnout as well as confusing the fans more.
Why Sarkodie's Mary Album flopped at TamaleThe people thought GHc20 was only an entry fee before paying for the actual Mary. To them, they wanted value for their money and didn’t see the need paying an amount to take pictures, buy an album and also sign autographs, at least a free performance would have sealed the deal just like the people enjoyed at West Hills Mall.
The radio/TV tours the superstar had was only limited to Accra, which also contributed to the low patronage at the venue. If the team had earlier focused on disseminating their messages well across all the platforms they will be visiting without depending highly on social media for their reach, it would have increased their sales knowing for a fact that his last album had a great turnout which led to a good run for their money.

Sarkodie who has stated that he’s of age to grant interviews anyhow granted only one interview on a radio station in Tamale making the buzz around the show very low. The buzz on Facebook and Twitter claims 50-100 fans gathered around the Discovery Hotel on the Tamale album launch.
Mary Album was produced by songwriter/musician Akwaboah and named after Sarkodie’s late grandmother –Mary, whose sudden death occurred in the rapper’s presence.
