Wizkid has finally released the much anticipated video to a song which featured Canadian rapper Drake.
“Come Closer” leaked online January 14, 2017. The track is a single from Wiz’s forthcoming Sounds From the Other Side LP.
Wizkid officially released this single on March 31, 2017 just two months after the leak. Meanwhile, the official video was released on April 6, 2017 but Drake does not make an appearance in it.
The video was directed by Nigerian-born and UK-based Oladapo ‘DAPS’ Fagbenle who is also responsible for Migos’ “T-Shirt” video and it features models Bria Myles and Chasity Simone. The video has already reached 188,532 views in less than 24hrs after its release.
However, fans who couldn’t hide their disappointment took to micro-blogging site Twitter to ask several questions about Drake’s disappearance in the video.
While Wizkid and Drake have become semi-frequent collaborators, working together on “One Dance”, “One Dance (Dubplate)”, and “Ojuelegba (Remix)” fans have attributed Drake’s disappearance to his verses released on the song.
Drake was heard rapping:
“Too mix up in drama to free my mind
Jealous people around me, I need to change my life
I just turn colder every time I try
What would I do without you, my chargie?
I don’t feel that way with anybody
Tell me your secrets, I’m not messy…”
Although his lyrics doesn’t clearly state his disappearance, the use of “Chargie” in his verse makes a lot of sense to his boycott. Chargie is a Jamaican Patois meaning friend or “bro”. The video which took a similar creative path like Drake’s Hotling Bling was meant to showcase African collections in its bit.
In Hotline Bling, the video begins with several curvaceous women shown in pink tops and high-waisted slim jeans- shown in an office for a dating hotline, Drake is shown in a white room moving and grooving to his latest single. Take note, the ladies are all Caucasian whilst in Wizkid’s Come Closer, the ladies are all African.
Another thing to note about both videos. Drake’s was directed by Canadian music video director Julien Christian Lutz (Director X) whilst Wiz’ was handed by Nigerian-born Oladapo ‘DAPS’ Fagbenle.
It simply means, Drake’s absence was needed to make a statement in Wiz’ forthcoming album Sounds From the Other Side which is due in June 9 2017. Also, to compliment Wizkid praising his continent saying; “African-born, me rep my ting, yo…Me come clean like me come inna me video.”
It’s simply an amazing video. Meanwhile, in an attempt to explain why Drake wasn’t featured in the video, Wizkid tweeted, “Had a family emergency during ‘One Dance’ video shoot, and Drake was on tour when we did ‘Come Closer’. No bad blood, one love still.” He has however, deleted the tweet.
