An astonishing story! Twelve years after Portugal’s heartbreak against Greece, they have finally beaten the hosts France by one goal to nil in the final!
The sensory overload of emotion with tears from both, but for many different reasons. While many of the France players look inconsolable as they sit dejected on the turf, Portugal are European champions, despite losing Ronaldo after 25 minutes, despite winning one match in 90 minutes, despite looking like they could lose 4-0 in the first 10 minutes.
France are shattered, with Coman in tears as well. I’ve never known so many tears in a football match. So many people were immense for Portugal: Pepe, Nani, Rui Patricio, Ronaldo, Carvalho, Pepe, Pepe. Pepe.
Ronaldo collapsed in tears for the 18th time in tonight’s clash yet Portugal went in absolutely wild. There are tears everywhere, Ronaldo was on his back. This is a glorious triumph of the human spirit. Where do you start? Pepe, who was utterly magnificent, was just sick on the pitch.
At some point (117 min of play) Guerreiro cramped, or some other injury, which led to a break in play. He was helped off the field, and Portugal couldn’t do much about his situation because they had used all three subs.
France on the other hand had a fair play. Martial tried to run Cedric, who defended splendidly giving Portugal some minutes away from immortality. Pepe took no chances with the top heads. He made sure all corners were sealed for France’s safety. He was immense. Whilst Griezmann’s shots were cleared to Joao Mario at some point, Quaresma, who had a fairly simple first-time ball to put Nani through on goal – over hit it! Oh my goodness, what a chance that was.
Cristiano Ronaldo’s sadness turned to joy after Portugal substitute Éderzito António Macedo Lopes commonly known as Eder put his side ahead. The former Swansea striker, average during his time at the Liberty Stadium, has let fly from 25 yards out and found the bottom left-hand corner of Hugo Lloris’ goal!
The France keeper desperately dived to his right but he just couldn’t get there and Eder wheels away in celebration. There are tears from the Portugal bench, most notably under the eyes of Ronaldo, and France are on the brink of defeat in the national stadium. Hail the new champions as Ronald lifts the trophy for the first time! Portugal are champions!
