MTN Ghana, the country’s largest telecommunications service provider launched the MTN Hitmaker reality show to support music talents and has since been fruitful expect for one factor, the reality show produced irrelevant artistes.
The MTN Hitmaker is an original talent hunt reality show opened to Ghanaians who believe they are bound to be Hitmakers. MTN Hitmaker strives to discover and nurture the great creative potential in Ghana but after the reality show, most of their talent hunted are back the bushes looking for hope… So what could the problem really be?
Is it bad producers during their training sessions – No! The reality show actually employs the best producers and judges in the country at the moment.
In the keenly contested finals on Wednesday August 10, 2016, Kelvin defeated other finalists, F9, Eugene and Sir Tino to win the fourth edition of the music reality show.
Kelvin is the winner of MTN Hitmaker season 5 which came off at the the National Theatre.
F9 placed second, Eugene was third and Sir Tino was fourth respectively.
After being declared winner, Kelvin thanked God for making him win the competition but my fear is his future as a musician. What is he going to do differently that the previous winners haven’t done? His win has even been criticized by many, giving him a cut of fanbase already.
Whilst Kofi Kinaata, MzVee and Kidi (winner of 2015) put up electrifying performances at the just ended event, I wish Kelvin the best…
In as much as the MTN hitmaker seasons continue to roll, little or nothing has actually been heard of the past winners. Koo Ntakra from one side of the season 2 who announced his inclusion in the preselection face for this year’s Midem Artist Accelerator program hasn’t been much of a hot cake for music fanatics aside crying to DJs and presenters to air his music even after winning the crown. Torgbe is totally lost whilst season 4 winner Kid is still finding his lesson notes.
At this juncture one may ask where the first season winner could be. Indeed, the first season of the MTN Hitmaker reality show saw Naterial win the coveted prize but he’s has since been missing in action. The last time I heard of him was when he released a song titled “Your Love is Like Cow”, a song which defines the unconditional love a woman has for him and in accordance with that he will kill a cow for the woman as a reward. Pathetic!
From the many reality shows in Ghana, it seems they are all up for the glam and nothing else as most of their winners fail terribly as musician. Sometimes the song they release after their so-called win baffles the mind! One can’t simply “think far”! We can talk of Chris from Vodafone Icons, Trozo amongst others. They have all failed terribly as musicians even after all the grooming in the talent hunt house.
I think it’s time the organizers of music reality shows rethink their priorities in discovering talents to help promote the music industry. Their creations has actually given false hope to many unnecessary artistes who have ended up flooding the music industry.
