 – The countdown is on to the implosion of the Georgia Dome at 7:30 a.m. Monday. Nearly 5,000 pounds of explosives will be used to bring down the stadium that was once home to the Atlanta Falcons.

The explosives will detonate in 12 seconds, and the stadium should collapse in 15 seconds, according to the Georgia World Congress Center Authority which operates the Georgia Dome.

The Georgia Dome opened in 1992, and hosted a number of major sporting events, including the 1996 Olympics, two Super Bowls, three NCAA Final Fours, the Peach Bowl, SEC Championships in football and basketball as well as Georgia high school football championships.Georgia Dome replaced by $1.6 billion Mercedes Benz Stadium after implosion

The Dome has been replaced by the $1.6 billion Mercedes Benz Stadium, which sits just 83 feet from the old stadium. A number of streets in the immediate vicinity of the Georgia Dome are closed this morning. Two MARTA stations close to the Georgia Dome are also closed, and trains are not running west from the Five Points station until later in the day.
